Greetings ! Hope 2012 is off to a delicious start for you!

Made a ton of New Year’s Resolutions, sort of taking the shotgun approach this year. If I make enough resolutions I’m sure to hit some of them. Actually got a lot of the last year’s resolutions under my belt: visited Rome, taught five workshops, completed a new book, but still haven’t learned fluent Italian. Well, there it is. Hope everyone had a perfectly Dickensian Christmas season. I know I did, but I think the three ghosts of Christmas that visited me were just indigestion from too much pie, turkey, and ham. Yikes!

GOOD NEWS!

The New Year is off to a great start - I received Honorable Mention for my painting ‘Vagabonds at Rest’ from the Oil Painters of America ' Fall 2011 OPA Online Showcase Competition' juried by the very talented Dan Beck. This painting portrays two beggar women on the Spanish Steps in Rome taking a break to gossip about tourists. A personal favorite of mine! To see complete list of winners click here.

New Book and Current Winter Exhibitions

Greetings!

November's here and it's that time to bundle up and get the sweaters out if you're here in Los Angeles (or sweep those leaves up and get the snow shovel ready if you're further up North). I miss those Autumn colors I used to see in Montreal, like the entire forest was ablaze with color but in a good way, not a run for your life way. I have posted this recent painting to pay homage to the memory of those crisp and colorful autumn days.

WORKSHOPS UPDATE!

I've got one last workshop scheduled for 2011 so there's still an opportunity to join me in Big Sur for some plein air fun! Ahhhh, Big Sur, where Heaven really has come down and touched Earth. After a long day of painting 'en plain air' you can unwind by soaking in natural sulphuric hot springs, the stone tubs lining the cliffside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Skilled massage therapists are on hand to work out all the muscular knots that five hours of standing, painting, and concentrating can create. The food is all organically grown on site, and the kitchen provides three nutritious square meals a day in a beautiful oak finished dining hall.

Looking Back, Forging Ahead

It's good to be back in the blogosphere! I hope everyone's New Year is off to a great start and that all your resolutions are sturdy and full of promise, like an acorn, that could be an oak tree eventually. An acorn, they're a hard nut to crack, ask any squirrel, they'll tell you.

~ Highlights of 2010 ~

There have been so many wonderful and exciting moments in the past year. Exciting group shows, prestigious plein air invitationals, mind bending roller coasters, indeed too many to list! If I had to pick my favorite adventure then my trip to Paris, France tops the list.
Oh Paris, can my blog ever do you justice? The things you showed me in your wonderful architecture and wondering populace were without equal. I'd like to tell the tales of the terrifying toilets, trying tourist traps, and terrorist threats. The musical washing machine, the striking thespians, the sub-par restaurant service, the robust espressos, the disgruntled proletariat, the strange dress codes, the street musicians. Too much to say in too small a space. The museums alone, the cemeteries, the churches and spontaneous choirs on a Tuesday morning. The gardens of Versailles and the fascinating fake farm of Marie Antoinette. My head was spinning, my feet were blistering. Too much! Not to forget the house, gardens, and lily pond of Monet in Giverny! That is all I can put into words. Below are a few pics of my trips highlights:

Greetings Gentle Bloggers,

Once again I must sit down and write about what a mysterious thing life is. Life is like a riddle, wrapped in an enigma, put in a bottle, and then lost in an airport baggage claim. At least my life feels like it is ;-) It has been a busy past few months, with a whirlwind trip to Paris, several awesome group shows I participated in and a week long paint out at the '12th Annual Laguna Plein Air Painting Invitational'. I don't know where to begin, so I'll blog from the end and work my way back to the beginning. Indeed, the Paris trip itself was so condensed with layers of visceral voyage visuals that it will in fact need it's own separate blog, written possibly in the year 2011 after enough time has passed for me to make some kind of linear explanation for my experience. That being said, let me tell you about the Laguna Invitational, which passed as quickly, smoothly, and pleasurably as prune juice through a goose. It was great to catch up with all my awesome artists friends, painting amongst the beautiful landscapes of Laguna. I found some new magical sites like Victoria Beach, with its single castle spire rising dramatically to the mansion above it, the strange circular footprint of an abandoned wading pool carved into the rock beneath it. Another mysteriously delightful discovery was the legendary Crystal Cove, a hidden beach I'd heard so much about and finally visited! Crystal Cove is peppered with adorable cottage rentals including a strange pthalo green beach house museum of fifties game boards like Sorry and Monopoly. Takes me back to my childhood in Canada's cottage country, all those hands of gin rummy! The other events were also cool, sold some paintings, had some drinks, ate some cake, and laughed at my own jokes. Thanks so much to all the folks at LPAPA (Laguna Plein Air Painters Association) who made it possible! There's some hard working people behind the scenes making it all run smooth and stay fun! Here's to doing it all again in 2011!

Kicking off the Invitational at Treasure Island Park for an early morning orientation and paint out. All artists were required to paint an 8x10 for a silent auction. Clear skies, mild temps, fresh ocean breeze and a plein air easel. Ahhhhh, what more could you ask for.

Hello Bloggopheliacs!

A few months or so have passed and it's time to sit down and blog. For those who have consistently tuned in to read the latest bloggits and bloggellos of my bloggentuous blogsploits in the blig, blag blorld of the blarts, you have my sincerest bloggitude. To those just tuning in, welcome, you're in for a treat of the bloggest order. But enough of this bullbloggit, let's get on with the blog:

The high point of the past couple months surely was the Debra Huse Gallery's annual 'Just Plein Fun' event, which I was delighted and honored to participate in. Selected artists painted en plein air for five days on Balboa Island, the event culminating with the 'Brush Off' competition on the last day. I did not win the 'Brush Off' competition, but was surprised and pleased to receive 'First Place' for my painting 'Grand Canal Colors'! All in all, an excellent event and a great excuse for some stellar artists to come together and paint the lovely island colors. I have included a few pics from the event. Enjoy!

My painting 'Bill's Pick Up' was juried into the OPA's (Oil Painters of America) 'Western Regional Exhibition' . Opening reception and awards ceremony will be held at the Mountain Trails Gallery in Jackson Hole, WY this coming fall. Show opens October 9th and runs through November 10th, 2010.

My Exquisitely Ecstatic Esalen Workshop

Greetings Bloggophiles,

It’s been a busy summer to say the least, and hot on the heels of my fantastic high-desert experience of my Sedona workshop came the misty, ocean world of my Esalen workshop in Big Sur, California. If Sedona had the mystical discipline energy of Mars, with it’s desert red rock and powerful dry heat, then Esalen had the mystical emotional energy of Venus, with it’s lush green vegetation, vast blue Pacific Ocean horizon, and cliff side hot tubs. We felt thoroughly pampered with all the amenities one could possibly want near at hand. The large, spacious cafeteria provided a wide choice of meals using vegetables grown organically on the property.

The gardens not only provided fresh sustenance, but held a potpourri of visual stimuli in their gorgeous array of blooming flowers! Massage therapists were professional, caring and readily at hand to thwart any stress related muscular knots created by a long day painting. A small, circular meditation room overlooked a waterfall cascading down into the ocean, we meditated there until I was up to my eyeballs in inner peace. And the highlight, aside from the delightful company of my terrific students, had to be the hot tubs of natural sulphuric mineral spring water. The hot tubs are located right along the cliff’s face, the crashing waves hypnotically breaking over the stony beach below, and at night there exist no glare from the city lights to chase away the constellations above, and the not-so-rare shooting star can be seen burning out across the sky. In the mornings a white mist rolls in off the ocean, blanketing the gardens and edifices in a undulating fog, pulling nearby objects into sharp silhouette against the pale background scenery. Cinematic, painterly, the ghost of Sam Hyde Harris is doubtlessly haunting this small piece of paradise, trying to get his phantom painting just right. My Sedulous Sedona Workshop.....

My recent workshop in Sedona, AZ was just like my own personal bloggopia, filled with magic, wonder, and a whole lot of mystical vortexes. Sedona’s beauty is eternal, it never changes, but it changes you. From the undulating rock plateau below the red Cathedral Rock of Crescent Moon Park to the April blizzard in the mountain ghost town of Jerome, Sedona had surprises and challenges for the painter at every turn. This workshop was one of the most exciting, challenging and rewarding workshops I've taught so far. My wonderful students were a complete joy to be around. They were a delight to teach and the camaraderie amongst everyone was incredible. The Sedona Arts Center staff was extremely accommodating, friendly and professional! I look forward to my return in 2011!

This 8x10 demo of Slide Rock State Park was extremely challenging! Had to deal with inconsistent weather conditions throughout the whole demo......sunny to cloudy, cloudy to sunny. Oy!!

Carol Marine and I chit chatted while taking a brief break. I was soooooo thrilled and honored to have Carol attend my workshop. She is truly one of the best painters out there! And an awesome person to boot!

Mid week we ventured out to Jerome, a very eccentric and mysterious ghost town/artist's colony. Pictured here is James Coulter getting some color mixing tips from me as Carol looks on.
By the way, James generously donated one of his fabulous plein air 'Coulter System' pochade boxes (shown in pic). They are extremely easy to set up, light and ridiculously affordable!

Jeff diligently painting away, completely unperturbed by the blistering cold winds of the raging blizzard that sprung upon us out of nowhere!!

While in Jerome, we took refuge from the freakish weather to warm up with soothing libations and hearty food!

Thursday's afternoon demo was held in the quaint and historical Tlaquepaque Village (it was very cold and just about to drizzle!)

Sizzling and Sedulous Springtime

February saw the opening of my awesome solo show at the Segil Fine Art Source in Old Town Monrovia! I had so much fun, and it was great to see so many wonderful friends come out and support me. My other half Ben was zipping through the crowd in true Gemini fashion, making sure anyone who wanted to buy a piece didn't get lost in the shuffle, which was a true blessing, as it gave me a chance to chat and socialize to my heart's content! I haven't had a solo show in a while, so it was truly gratifying to do one again and I had as much fun as my very first time showing solo. The exhibition's still up until the 20th of March so make sure you get down there and take a look.

February Fruition

January is a month traditionally filled with pain and grief, sorrow and regret. January 18th was lauded as the most depressing day of 2010 by a renowned economist who used various mathematical equations and statistical theories to prove his veracity. But he was probably living in the North, possibly Minnesota or Canada, which is a certain extra level of pitiful as snow turns to icy wet slush crusted by brown layers of dirt. Anyway, thank goodness I'm in California now! Although I did have to put on a sweater yesterday, it gets pretty cold here too!

And to help cheer everyone up I'm announcing my super cool solo show entitled “Venerable Visions” held at the illustrious Segil Fine Art located in beautiful Old Town Monrovia right next to the brand new library! Opening reception is Saturday, February 20th, from 5 to 7pm! The exhibition will be on display through March 20th, 2010. Everyone try and make it, especially if you're living in the North, it's certain to brighten up your day!

Ho! Ho! Ho!
This is the cry I heard cut through the misty air as we drove down Santa Monica Blvd not but a few weeks ago. "Was that Santa calling through the air?!" I asked Ben, who then pointed to a large jolly man in a red jacket bellowing at a transsexual street walker. "Nope", Ben said, "but it is Christmas time in Hollywood".
We where returning from a delightful birthday party of my good friend (and exceptional artist) Vadim Zang held at an awesome Hungarian restaurant. Not only was the food enchanting, but several of Vadim's friends and family performed for us. There was belly dancing, violin and piano playing!
A perfect ending to a perfect evening which had begun with a delightful opening at Segil Fine Art's '7th Annual Holiday Show' (which runs through December 31st). Jam packed with fine art and fine artists, it was a great way to kick off the Holiday season. For more info click here.

~ '11th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational' ~

A few months ago I participated in the '11th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational'. Definitely more upbeat (and prosperous) than last year's event! The only real obstacle to fun and painting was Mother Nature herself, who chose to remain cloudy and rainy for about 60 percent of the time which had been allotted to painting. Then, in a somewhat infuriating ironic twist, decided to clear up and become sunny and bright after the paintings were turned in a ready to sell. Oh well, I still love Mama Nature, even when she's a bitch ;-). Overall the event was a huge success! Ben and I had a delightful time taking in the sights and sounds of Laguna beach, mingling with the artists and locals and, well.... just breathing some fresh, unsmogged air for a change. Hello all you Bloggitts down in Bloggittville, it is time for my blog-monthly bloggella, filled with horror, tears, and laughter. Halloween and the Day of the Dead may be behind us now, but my tale reaches further back in time, past such jovial occasions, far back to the third week of September, of the year 2009.

It was during this halcyon time of gaiety and youth that I boldly lead an adventurous team of students into the yellow fields of far off Ojai, beneath an unusually cruel and hot sun. Oh, how we laughed and jested, skipping merrily amongst the charming yurts of sequestered environmentalists and left-leaning elves. I shudder to think of what might had happened, had we by chance met a lurking troll, or some evil gnome with a head full of specially clever magic riddles, or even a banjo-plucking inbred hillbilly. But we didn't. Everyone was fine, and they all learned how to paint outdoors. No one even lost their keys, or general sense of purpose!

Summer's End and Southwest Art Article

Summer has passed, and with it the tumultuous cloud of toxic smoke from the unfortunate California wildfires which has so harassed the locals in my Los Feliz neighborhood. I was fortunate to have been vacationing briefly during this time in the lovely town of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, which is a little further than halfway up Cape Cod, and so benefited from the refreshing ocean air of the Atlantic. Ben and I lucked out this time, and lingered long enough to miss the bulk of the noxious California air, the extra time spent affording us an opportunity to catch the large pack of wild seals which lounge en masse upon the sandbars at Head of the Meadows Beach during low tide. Love those seals! (see pics below)

....FEELIN' THE LAGUNA LOVE....

I could write at great length about our August trip, but it is now October and I mustn’t tarry on the distant past. It has been a fantastic summer, with several noteworthy developments in my creative journey that I would love to share if you are so inclined as to read on. First and foremost, I am now a newly elected Signature Member of the venerable Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and as such will be participating in the 11th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. They are an amazing organization that I am honored to be a part of, and I look forward to painting amongst the cliffs and beaches of that fine locality.

It's been another mellow summer in la-la land as I float down the river of life in my inner tube of the arts. Some exciting adventures occurred around me this summer as I yawned, napped and scratched my back with a river reed which floated past me.
This past month I participated in the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association’s (LPAPA) 'Best of Plein Air' show held in Laguna Beach. To view all accepted entries from LPAPA’s wonderful artists click here.

Also, my painting ‘Ol' Blue’ was accepted into OPA’s (Oil Painters of America) '2009 Western Regional Exhibition' held at the Howard/Mandville Gallery in Kirkland, WA. This exciting show continues through August 30th.

Ojai Workshop Expedition

Greetings gentle blogaddict,
It was but a little over a month ago that I held my Ojai workshop, the gentle spring breeze coming off the Pacific ocean and cooling my diligent students from the cruel, unrelenting sun. Painter of light you say? Painter of deadly solar death rays I say! DEADLY SOLAR DEATH RAYS!! But we did manage to find some shade eventually at our many fine locations, the St Thomas Aquinas church, the Krotona Institute, Meditation Mount, Happy Valley's Beatrice Woods Center, and finally Mount Meher , real nice people at every turn. Visit them all with paint in hand, easel prone upon your sturdy back, a palette knife by your side to protect you from bears, visit them all! Tell them I sent you, they're all so friendly, and nice.

And the evenings, after our hearty toil, were spent languishing in the soft glow of the Ojai Pizzeria one night, the jazzy haze of the Movina Wine Bar the next. The topping of it all of course was the Deer Lodge, it's fantastical taxidermied Elk, Rams, Owls, and Jackalopes staring glassy eyed, down at our sumptuous repast of wild boar sausage and German beer. Oh, to capture nature in a landscape painting by day and see nature stuffed and mounted at night, there's nothing like it.

'Hunter, Gatherers'........oil on panel........19x24 inches

Greetings Blogsketeers!
Another fun-filled span of time has passed since my last blog, let's call this a blogparsec, which would be equivalent to one thirteenth of the rotation of our Earth around the star known to us as the Sun. Much has happened in this artist's life, nay cosmology, during this blogparsec: entire microbiological civilizations having grown, warred, learned to accept each other, and subsequently perished beneath the crumbling cinderblock of my art studio windows. Other, more immediately pertinent artistic occurrences of the blogparsec include my painting 'Hunter Gatherers' being accepted into the OPA's '18th National Juried Exhibition' held at Sage Creek Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. This boldly painted portrayal of three men of easy virtue, street walking in Times Square, clad only in bright fluorescent orange garb, diligently working with the trash of New York's grimy underbelly. They are the neo-hunter gatherers of today's urban society. Thus the title.
‘Hunter, Gatherers’ will be on display at the Sage Creek Gallery throughout the month May.

**NOTEWORTHY NEWS AND NEWSWORTHY NOTES!**

Also of note to the macro-consciously aware beings during the last blogparsec I was honorably awarded an ‘Honorable Mention’ on my ‘Subway Siesta’ whilst participating in the Greenhouse Gallery's 'Salon International 2009' by the venerable judge Mr. Daniel E. Greene. In addition, I also made the ‘Jury’s Top 50’ list.

Hail fellow/fella well met! Wow! This year is whizzing by!!
It was with this in mind that I painted a portrait of my muse Ben for the Pasadena Museum of History’s ‘Contemporary Masters II’ exhibition. Here you can see him portrayed as the veritable spirit of gregariousness, a virtual incarnation of the god Dionysus, as he rests upon a park bench with his sketchbook. Just outside the frame are several nymphs and satyrs prancing with an oversized flagon of wine made from the skin of a cow. Well! Ben was just happy that I painted him with his pants on.
'Contemporary Masters II' exhibition will be on view until April 11th, 2009.

In other news of my whirlwind life I've had 'Subway Man' accepted in the Greenhouse Gallery's Salon International 2009. Yay!
Whilst vacationing in far off Manhattan, I could not help but notice this gentleman fast asleep aboard the local tunnel traveling carriage. What a sight, thought I, the black and white checkered shirt's cool patterns against the warm neutrals and glorious blues and mauves in his skin. I tried to capture the peacefulness he exuded while asleep on noisy train. It was worth dragging my pochade box and paints down into the New York subway system and feeding a local Manhattanite whiskey till he passed out. Ha ha, just kidding.

Looking Back at the Laguna Invitational...

This painting was on exhibit at the Laguna Museum throughout the 10th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational.

Greetings everyone and Happy December! Here is a brief recap of the event.....

We kicked off the weekend with a jovial 'artists only' get together Friday night. Aaaaaah...the warm summer air, fragrant with flowers and salty ocean mist while eating enchiladas at the Strotkamps' yearly barbecue. Jay and Mary Strotkamp, delightful people with a fantastic collection of paintings by luminary painters such as Richard Schmid, Mian Situ, and Scott Burdick to name a few. Afterward, I sat by the pool at our hotel as Ben built an enormous fire in the outdoor fireplace. We lured the curious guests out of their rooms like moths to a...well to an enormous fire.

But it wasn't all just enchiladas and poolside fires. There was serious work to do, paintings to paint, people to meet. Early Saturday morning the participating painters met for breakfast at the Laguna Museum before staking out our 'quick draw' spots. I chose to perch precariously upon a cliff side surrounded by cacti, the colorfully dangerous painting spectators confined to stand upon stairs behind a sturdy metal rail. I felt very safe, like Briar Rabbit in the Briar Patch. No fooling with me. The air horn was sounded by a friendly Australian man in a wide brim hat and we were off and painting! We had a two hour time limit to complete our 'quick draw' paintings. OY! Time has always been my nemesis, and I felt its presence stronger and greater than ever before! I wrestled with it, pulling it's ears and poking it in the eyes with my thin "rigger" brush, used most often for fine details like telephone lines and thin branches but this time mostly for poking ‘Time’ in the eyes. It was fierce. Sweat was upon my brow. The cacti my only friends. I blacked out the last half hour, have no memory at all about it. Think it has something to do with a tangential universe which collapsed upon itself due to the paradox of ‘Time’ being momentarily blind. Not sure. Regardless, I came away with a satisfactory piece of art and it was back to the hotel to clean up and get dressed for the opening night gala, filled with fine art, fine wine and fine food!

And the people! The people I met! So many wonderful people, collectors and painters and fans who made two-hour drives just to meet and support me. Painters I have idolized for years I met and lunched with. All in all, it was an enriching, awesome and exhilarating event and look forward to participating again next year!

A few goings-on coming up……
I will be participating in the Tenth Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational this coming weekend. A ‘Quickdraw’ is scheduled for October 18th from 9am to 11am. Laguna Museum will be opened to the public on October 19th from 11am to 3pm to showcase the ‘Quickdraw’ paintings as well as some of the participating artists' personal favorites.

Holy s**t, is it August already?! My apologies for the extended blog absence. I’ve been busily exploring the majestic southwest and devouring tasty meals.
“One Cantaloupe Left”... the words inspire fear and awe in most, tinged with a loneliness that's hard to place. One, not two. One cantaloupe is all that's left. Odd for such a lousy tasting fruit, used mostly in cheap fruit salads. Only one. One cheap, lonely, bad tasting fruit. This is what I was contemplating as I painted this. I was also inspired by the dramatic compositional focus proffered by the white down jacket against the dark Manhattan brownstone. Bittersweet. Just like cantaloupe.

This was inspired by my trip to Manhattan's Chinatown, where the fragrant smells and vibrant colors cried out to be captured on canvas. I also liked the patterns in the Chinese grill fence behind this unassuming, neon-orange clad, fruit-feeling fellow. Enjoy!

Greetings everyone. This past month I’ve been busily painting for my two-person show at the Greenwich Workshop Gallery in Connecticut (see show invite below). I will be exhibiting new works inspired by a recent trip to New York and Connecticut. Pictured above is one of the pieces which will be on display. Cindy Baron, a truly accomplished and talented painter, will be showing with me.
Preparing for this show was extremely intense due to the short preparation time provided. Those New Yorkers! Always rushing this way and that, short deadlines and GO! GO! GO! Thank God for coffee!!! On top of that, my preparation time was cut even shorter by the necessary week-long visit to Manhattan to acquire reference material. It was non-stop from the moment we landed at JFK to the time we returned to LAX. I like that, because when I re-turn to LAX , I re-LAX ;-) New York was very busy and fast paced is all I'm saying. We covered every inch of Manhattan, from Washington Heights where Ben and I were staying (yes, we went to the Cloisters) to walking along the Brooklyn Bridge and seeing the World Trade Center Memorial Site (extremely powerful and moving, everyone should go to pay their respects). Hit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, went to Barney Greengrass Deli, visited Times Square three nights in a row, walked through Chelsea, Tribeca, China Town, Little Italy, SoHo, Greenwich Village, East Village, Lower East Village, Central Park and ventured off the island briefly to Queens for Russian-Jewish shish kebob.

This trip was bittersweet for me, however, as it brought home the recent untimely passing of a very near and dear friend.
Cynthia Fancher, my late ballet teacher, was a true New Yorker and will be greatly missed.

Wow! Is it already February!?
Hello bloggers and draft dodgers! Lend me your ear for the new year! Hope everyone’s year is off to a rambunctious start! Started off the new year with an impromptu visit to Jumbo’s Clown Room and received a complementary birthday lap dance, much to the delight of the lascivious voyeurs who make up our Wednesday night painting workshops. Thanks for making me feel special guys ;-)
It's all just a blurred memory now except for the nasty head cold I caught and the harrowing 15 hour hang over I endured the day following my 40th birthday soiree. Sworn off drinking AGAIN! Hope to find the meaning of life by February 17th, 2008. No particular reason for that date, but it's important to have deadlines and stick to them.

I'm extremely pleased to announce my painting 'Chapter Four' (pictured below) has been accepted into the ‘Salon International 2008’ juried exhibition. This juried exhibition is a project of the International Museum of Contemporary Masters and will be hosted by Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio, Texas. Exhibition opens in gallery and on web site on April 12th, 2008.

Feeling festive and foolish, sipping spiked eggnog, I sit here ecstatically contemplating my blog....
Holidays are fast encroaching as the year is coming to a close. I'm
writing now from my brain which is sitting in a warm and cozy skull, safe from the rain and elements.

This painting was done on the grounds of the ‘Barlow Respiratory Hospital’ located in Elysian Park (just minutes from the Dodger Stadium), where lascivious and restless young men meet, greet and generally frolic amongst the brush and foliage. Oh, if leaves could talk! When I first arrived at this particular building/bunker I assumed it was abandoned due to the general disrepair. “Was it a ghost I see!?”.... thought I, as an old man in hospital scrubs strolled casually past, pulling an oxygen tank behind him. A quick toss of a rock told me no, he was flesh and blood just like me! When confronted by this angrily gibbering lunatic, my painting comrade Jose told him in no uncertain terms that he shouldn't smoke a cigarette at a respiratory hospital, certainly not while pulling an oxygen tank! This quick guilt reversal seemed to do the trick, and we painted in an uninterrupted manner for the remainder of the very cold and brisk afternoon.

Hello Bloggers and Blogging People, People of the Blogosphere, Blogizens of Blogilization. Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving. Let me tell you of my adventures in the world beyond the internet which I know as Earth. Picture if you will a place with wide open spaces and fresh balmy air. We on Earth call this the outside ;-) It was whilst venturing “outside” that I executed several small paintings pictured above. These two I have selected for your perusal because they had both been submitted and accepted into the 2007 Greenwich Workshop Gallery’s Small Works Exhibition which took place this past weekend.

First, there is the painting “Oak Park, Illinois”. Because of the small sized canvas I was able to capture the fleeting afternoon light. Considering how cold it was, it was necessary to paint in an expedient manner. Next, I refer you to “The Old Barn”. This was painted in Ojai, located just an hour’s drive from Los Angeles. Ojai’s a sleepy little town founded by hippies during the sixties. It has an abundance of rustic, rural, recreational regions, regulated regularly by Reagan-era rebels. Ridiculous! I was fortunate to find a friendly fifty-something farmhand named Fred whose foresight and faith in feet and foreskins…....aah forget it. Excelsior!!! …..channeling Dr. Seuss…….

Glassel Park’s San Fernando Blvd. is peppered with old wrecking yards and dilapidated service stations which provides ample painting fodder teeming with rich textures and colors. While cruising on the boulevard, scouting for an interesting scene with my painting buddy Erik Houg, I came across Tony’s Auto Wrecking garage. I found the warm colors of the structure against the clear blue sky appealing, although the funky little tow truck was the main attraction. Being extra cautious about the oncoming 18- wheelers and speed freaks, we quickly scurried across the street and set up on a tiny shaded curb with minimal protection from the streaming traffic.
Ahhh yes! Nothing like adrenaline, searing hot weather, car exhaust and occasional badgering from the local cart-pushing schizophrenic vagrant to stoke the fires of creativity while painting en plein air!

"FORGOTTEN PLACES REMEMBERED" ~ A One Woman Show~

My solo show started off well, with a generous influx of guests which continued throughout the reception. Time flew by as I excitedly tried to greet everyone who attended. There were collectors, friends and family in attendance. I saw many old friends and made new ones. At one point the room got too crowded and warm forcing the guests to spill out onto the sidewalk outside the gallery. The exciting, prosperous and festive evening ended with an informal and delicious dinner with friends at Bella Sera Trattoria in Old Town Monrovia. Red Shack

Visited the Sunset Ranch stables with my sister Sophie one sunny morning and painted this little, antiquated red shack perched on a gently slopping hill overlooking horse corrals and an incredible view of Los Angeles. The ranch, nestled within a little canyon at the top of Beachwood drive, offers sunset horse rides through Griffith Park and has been extensively used for shoot locations for films and photography (including a scene from David Lynch’s, ‘Mullholland Drive’). A large, weathered 1920’s style barn that still retains it’s charm and character accommodates rental and privately owned horses.
Free roaming peacocks, chickens and a friendly golden retriever casually meandered throughout the grounds. An exotic looking spotted rooster sporting a cockscomb that resembled a punked-out hair piece made random and unsettling crowing sounds (like that of a cat being tortured) that repeatedly disturbed my calm as I painted within this serene equestrian oasis. Sunset Ranch is infused with a sense of nostalgia and a timeless quality of the old west. Painting amid it’s charming relics and natural beauty was extremely enjoyable and invigorating.

Under the Overpass

'Do Not Enter - Wrong Way'.........oil on canvas panel........6x8 inches
Walking along Riverside Drive which runs adjacent to the '5' freeway, I discovered this delightful cityscape of concrete canyons draped in lush, green vinery. I set up to paint directly across a freeway exit while Jose settled for a more panoramic view of the overpass. Being engulfed by a swirling mass of exhaust fumes from cars exiting the freeway was exhilarating, and I hoped that some small grit from the freeway would imbed itself on my canvas like a gnat might for my country bumpkin counterparts. Two homeless men of good cheer emerged from the shadows, one carrying a sporty homemade spear created from an old broom stick, a sharp piece of rusted metal, all wrapped together by a coat hanger. He claimed to use it for his fishing expeditions in the L.A. river. His compatriot was dressed in an old military jacket doused in vodka, and was incapable of human speech, making only gurgling and clicking sounds which attracted several squirrels to him. With large toothy grins they invited me and my painting buddy Jose to join them in a jaunty walk by the LA River in search of fairies and magic, talking catfish. I declined, silently feeling inside my backpack for my pepper spray. Good times......;-)

I painted this portrait of Yolanda, an aspiring actress, during a three hour painting session at the Los Feliz workshop (please click on Los Feliz Workshop link to the right for more info regarding the workshops)
Initially I met the lovely Yolanda at a local diner Ben and I frequently visit. While Yolanda was taking our lunch order, I finally summoned enough courage and asked her to model for our painting workshop. She affably agreed and was a complete joy to work with. She conducted herself professionally and remained motionless the entire time she posed.

:: TOO CLOSE TO HOME ::

'Griffith Park Brush Fire' - May 08th, 2007

A few days ago, Ben and I (as well as hundreds of Los Feliz residents) had to evacuate our home due to the rapidly encroaching brush fire that swept through one fifth of Griffith Park. I'll never forget the feeling of panic washing over me as I stepped out the front door to witness a wall of turbulent flames creeping down the hillside towards the homes nestled close to the park entrance. I raced back into the house to grab my cat and immediately fled the house and found refuge at our art studio located a little less than two miles from our house.
Throughout the evening we were barraged with numerous phone calls from anxious friends and family members who were concerned about our our safety......many generously and benevolently offering their homes for us to stay overnight or as long as we needed. My sister Sophie, her fiancé Andy and a few locals kept us company as we solemnly watched Griffith Park being ravaged by flames from atop the studio roof.
Fortunately (and thankfully) there were no major injuries or deaths and no homes were damaged. The newly renovated Observatory, the enchanting Cypress Grove I frequently hike to and the LA Zoo were also spared due to the tremendous dedication and hard work from our local firefighters. Wednesday night we were allowed to return to our respective homes safely and soundly.
Now that the dust has settled, the smoke has cleared and the embers have extinguished, life in Los Angeles is promptly getting back to normal and has already begun the healing process of physical and spiritual regeneration. Onward!

Visited the San Pasqual stables and painted this rugged and spacious, old brown barn shortly after my brief stay in Chicago. Jose De Juan, who joined me on this excursion, pointed out this wonderfully quaint and pastoral area located just south of the Arroyo in Pasadena.

A few weeks ago Ben and I took a five day sojourn to Chicago. We lodged in a charming and cozy bed and breakfast situated in the historic district of Oak Park, Illinois (only a five-minute walk from the Frank Lloyd Wright Homes and Studio).
Sightseeing, museum visits and family gatherings were some of the many activities we crammed into our brief yet overwhelmingly satisfying respite.

Revisited the Verdant Stables with an enthusiastic and talented painting posse a few weeks ago. While meandering my way throughout the grounds, I came across this little cranny between two horse stables. What caught my eye was the brilliant red bucket gleaming radiantly against the rich cast shadow on the cinderblock wall. The discarded green chair immersed in shade balanced befittingly with the warm, red color of the bucket. Overall, the arrangement of the randomly placed objects in this scene created a dynamic and amusing 'rural' still life.

Joining me on this plein air excursion were Joseph Stoddard and Jose De Juan, two wonderful artists who both produced deliciously delightful paintings of Verdant terrain.

Embarked on another voyage to Verdant with painting companion Bill Moore last week and did this little plein air study of the Griffith Park Metro Region parking lot across from the equestrian center entrance. Bill opted for the red truck bed (see Bill's dandy painting on his previous post by clicking on his link) >>>>>>>>>>>>
What compelled me to paint this scene were the two unoccupied and slightly skewed trailers that looked somewhat out of place. The cool and overcast weather conditions accentuated the soothing and pale mint-green color of the foreground trailer.

This is a little plein air sketch I did last week at the Verdant Equestrian Center with painting comrade Bill Moore (check out his version of a delightful 'horse trailer' painting on his previous blog post)
This revisited and rustic location offers an array of inspiring views and rural subject matter (the friendly, accommodating and cordial staff also make it a pleasant environment to paint in).

SGFAA Demo and Art Show

A few months ago, I was invited to do a demonstration for the San Gabriel Fine Art Association. The demonstration was held this Sunday in the Grapevine Room located in the heart of San Gabriel's historical Mission District. This happened to be my very first demo (which my friend Bill Moore strongly encouraged me to do).
I agreed to partake in the demo to overcome my fear of painting and speaking in front of a crowd. I was extremely nervous at first, however the anxiety eventually diminished as the demo progressed. Overall, the experience was very rewarding and enriching for me as well the viewers.

For the demo I did a painting based on this color sketch of 'Doghouse and Picket Fence'. I came across this quirky battered and lopsided doghouse during a brief sojourn in Ojai, CA.

Road to Recovery.....

This is a view of the Hyperion Bridge just east of Atwater Village in Los Angeles. While painting that morning, it occurred to me I should be at home resting. Not quite fully recovered from an upper respiratory infection, my temperature rose to 101.3 F ( I had my trusty digital thermometer handy- and no, not the rectal kind) ;-)
Call me insane, but I was completely content to be plein air painting, fever chills and all.

As I made my way back home from Chinatown one sunny afternoon, I drove by a parking lot bustling with sprightly shoppers.
Off in the distance, canopies aglow with light were set up to provide shade for the vendors.
The combination of rich color, shimmering light and the figures bestowed the right atmosphere of gaiety and vivacity which impelled me to paint this scene.

I came across a half-draped, antiquated Volkswagon beetle parked in a ramshackled carport. The intense late morning sunlight cast dramatic and rich shadows within the structure and created an interesting and elaborate pattern of light and dark shapes.
What also appealed to me about this subject matter was the sense of mystery evoked by the suggestion of obscurity and intrigue amidst the shadows.

'Somewhere Near Chinatown'........oil on canvas panel........7x9"
William Wray and I found this gritty, nonrural location just minutes from Chinatown. I was drawn to the variety of textures and the stark contrast of the foreground buildings with the distant Los Angeles city scape. My first attempt was a disaster, but I persevered and had another go at it. The overwhelming paint fumes renedered me silly and light-headed but fortunately I made it through without passing out. Oh, the joys of plein air painting!

Post Holiday Stuff

Finally, the holidays are behind us! I despise this time of the year. Rather than subject myself to the usual family drama and strife, my boyfriend Ben and I opted to spend Christmas in Ojai, a quaint, little eclectic town located one hour north of Los Angeles. Below are two small plein air sketches I did during my two day sojourn in Ojai.

While exploring the idyllic Ojai countryside, we came across a horse and cattle ranch. It was late afternoon and the mountains and cattle were beautifully backlit from the waning sun thus urging me to stop by the side of the road to paint this scene.

The following day, we drove a few miles north of the ranch and discovered a small, deserted fishing lake nestled in a valley across from an abandoned inmate labor camp. Sweet! Although the labor camp was obviously uninhabited for years, my vivid imagination left me feeling disquieted and paranoid at the prospect of a crazed and dangerous convict at large charging towards Ben and me. I walked around the lake until I found a view that appealed to me. I used Ben's car parked in the distance as a focal point to offset the placid composition.
The cool, overcast weather provided ample painting time, however, I painted hurriedly due to my paranoia, the random gunshots in the distance and fresh bear poop on the trails leading to the lake. Oh, and it was freaking cold!!

Zuma Beach

In order to banish the holiday blues and infuse a little warmth into my cold, wintery days, I painted a beach scene using a small color sketch and photo reference. It was overcast that morning and the clouds began to evaporate at around noon which caused the background mountains to appear veiled and mysterious. I wanted to create a sense of vast space and isolation by using the deserted life guard staion as a focal point.

Happy feet......
although they look a little puckered from wading in the freezing water too long!

LA River Beach

Went back to a familiar location at the LA Wash with Bill Moore and Joe Stoddard in tow. The morning sun breaking through the moist atmosphere made the light appear gauzy and goldeny.

Art Fair

While making my way through the exhibition booths at the Beverly Hill's art fair back in October, I came across a gentleman unwinding from a day's hard work. The sun dappled tents and luminous pink flower bed caught my eye. I found the high contrast lighting on the jaunty exhibitor to be quite appealing as well. I took a few reference photos and completed this painting at the studio.

LA Wash Near Eatz Cafe

And yet, another rendition of the L.A. Wash. This extraordinary landmark offers an inexhaustible amount of views to paint!
This section of the wash is located near Eatz Cafe, a modest, little greasy-spoon diner golfers frequent. I did a previous painting of the same area but was unhappy with the results. I finally went back last weekend and painted another version with Bill Moore.

What compelled me about this scene was the dramatic shadow cast onto the stable and the contrast of the cool and warm hues in the foreground. By the way, why do horses get so freaked out when they see an open umbrella??

This little trail/tunnel is located right behind the Autry Museum and runs parallel to the Golden State freeway. I painted this one with my buddy Bill Moore (awesome watercolorist by the way!)

And last but not least, this is the opposite view of the same tunnel (pix above). I painted this view alongside William Wray sometime in April.

Holiday 'Treasures' Show

The intense, burst of vermillion from the backlit flowers to the right caught my eye. I also liked the idea of using a dominant and repetitive color (red) to suggest the relationship between organic and man-made objects.

The Stables

Pathways have always intrigued me. I like when a scene draws me in and I felt this particular view did that. This is one of the many little sketches I painted at the Verdant Equestrian Center.

This particular painting was very challenging. I had to contend with the unforgiving gusts of wind that blew dust in my face and the wary, equestrian personnel. My friend Paul Rafferty just looked on with amusement as I ranted and raved. Don't know how I managed to pull that one off without my morning coffee.

Little Green Tractor

My good friend Bill Moore encouraged me to finally set up a blog. This is my first post and I am excited to share the unfolding of my creative and personal journey.
I did this little painting at the Verdant Equestrian Center. I was drawn to the little tractor in the foreground shadows and the sunlit patch that illuminated the gate in the background.
